With winter comes ice, and with ice come falls and injuries. Here are some tips for walking safely on ice to avoid these falls:
- Wear shoes with ice traction slip-ons or metal cleats
- Walk with feet slightly apart and knees slightly bent to provide stability
- Use small, shuffling steps and hold your arms out for balance if necessary
- Walk sideways when going downhill to avoid the “skiing effect”
- If carrying items, be sure to distribute weight evenly
- Try using grassy or landscaped areas, which are typically less icy than sidewalks
